What Does It Mean to Become an Adult?

At what moment does a human being actually become an adult?
Is it when the law says so?
When a person earns their own money?
When they start a family?
Modern society offers many milestones, yet none of them truly answer the question.
Something deeper is involved.
Adulthood is not simply about age or responsibility. It is about learning to navigate life consciously, with awareness, curiosity, and the courage to create.
From early childhood, authority figures often hold the answers. Parents, teachers, doctors, and leaders are expected to know more and guide the way forward.
Later in life, that expectation quietly continues. Authority becomes associated with certainty, answers, and control.
Yet reality has a way of dissolving that illusion.
Teachers are human.
Leaders make mistakes.
Experts disagree.
These moments can feel destabilizing. Yet they can also mark the beginning of something important.
The invitation is not to search endlessly for the perfect authority.
The invitation is to begin cultivating your own.
Adulthood, in this sense, is not a destination.
It is a lifelong practice of curiosity, responsibility, integration, and conscious choice.
